Mozilla Firefox Thunderbird

Firefox, Thunderbird, and Sunbird Packages for Solaris 8-10 for SPARC and x86, Firefox 3-52 and Thunderbird 3-52 for OpenSolaris and Solaris 10.

These packages are provided “Free of Charge” as a convenience to our visitors. They are the ONLY packages in our repository that are not compiled by us, and were contributed by External Offshore developers in East Asia. We can provide our own versions of Firefox 11 that has been compiled by us in the USA as a bundle complete with its dependencies and install script. If this is of interest please submit a Package Request for a quotation.

Thunderbird — created by Mozilla, the organization behind Firefox — has been a popular free email client with a loyal following over the years, despite threats of halting updates and further development of the application. Excellent mail client from the makers of Firefox. Thunderbird is a desktop email client, an alternative to Microsoft's Outlook, from the developers of Firefox. Thunderbird is Mozilla's award winning and free solution to manage your mail more efficiently. And there are many advantages of switching to it too. A: Thunderbird (www.thunderbird.net) is a third-party email client created by Mozilla, the same company that releases the popular Firefox web browser. When installed, it lets you connect to your.

Thunderbird and Firefox are labeled for Solaris 8 and 10, but the Solaris 8 packages should also work on Solaris 9. (The Solaris 10 package will not work for Solaris 9.) Sunbird is for Solaris 10 only. Firefox 3-52 and Thunderbird 3-52 are available for OpenSolaris and Solaris 10. Note that these packages are compressed with bzip2. Packages for bunzip2 are available from our packages archive if your system does not already have bzip2 installed.

Mozilla Firefox Thunderbird

Warning – it had been reported and we have confirmed that version 29.0 of Firefox can fail with a core dump. One quick solution is to backup the user’s .mozilla directory and let Firefox create a new one. This has the problem of not retaining the user’s bookmarks etc. You may want to update to 29.0.1 or 30.0 or higher, which we hope has corrected the issue.

The Firefox and Thunderbird packages install the programs in /opt/sfw subdirectories via the following steps, run as root. For example:

bunzip2 firefox-52.0.2esr.en-US.solaris-10-fcs-i386-pkg.bz2

pkgadd -d firefox-52.0.2esr.en-US.solaris-10-fcs-i386-pkg

Some users have reported that if the directory /opt/sfw is actually a link to some other directory, when you run pkgadd to install these packages, it will delete the link and create a new /opt/sfw directory. If this happens, you will need to move the Firefox files to your other directory and relink /opt/sfw to it. Alternatively, for Firefox 52.0.2esr, 45.5.1esr, 38.7.1esr, 31.0, 30.0, 29.0.1, 28.0, 27.0.1, 26.0, 25.0.1, 24.0. 23.0.1, 22.0, 21.0, 20.0.1, 19.0.2, 18.0.1, 17.0.1, 16.0.2, 15.0.1, 14.0.1, 13.0.1, 12.0, 11.0, 10.0.2, 9.0.1, 8.0.1, 7.0.1, 6.0.2, 5.0, 4.0.1, and 3.6.18 or Thunderbird 3.1.11, 5.0, 6.0.2, 7.0.1, 8.0, 9.0.1, 10.0.2, 11.0, 12.0, 13.0.1, 14.0, 15.0.1 16.0.2, 17.0.8, 24.7.0, and 31.0, 38.7.1, 45.5.1, and 52.0, you can use the tarred versions of the packages found in our package archive. Some users have found that it is easier to use the tarred form of the files. For example, if you untar a Firefox tarred package in /opt/sfw, it will create a firefox subdirectory there and you can run firefox from that directory with ./firefox.

When we install Sunbird, we put the appropriate file into /opt/sfw and bunzip2 and untar it. It creates an /opt/sfw/sunbird directory. /opt/sfw/sunbird/sunbird starts the program. You can choose a different installation location if you wish.

More details on installation and potential issues can be found in Firefox-2-README, Firefox-3-README, Firefox-6-README, or Thunderbird-3-README.

Building a Thunderbird extension
Step-by-step explanation on how to build an extension for Thunderbird.

Mozilla Firefox Thunderbird

The following documentation provides help for creating extensions for the Thunderbird email client. There are similarities with Firefox extensions, but there are also differences that may confound the starting Thunderbird developer. This documention series focuses on Thunderbird.

Getting started with Thunderbird

A brave, young developer wants to develop an add-on for Thunderbird. These links to help through this journey.

  • Start by reading the tutorial and learn how to build a Thunderbird extension. Also see Thunderbird 57-60 add-ons guide for changes introduced in Thunderbird 60.
  • Read about the main windows to learn about « thread pane », « preview pane », and « folder pane ».
  • Play with a demo add-on that exercises some more advanced Thunderbird-specific features
  • Want to do even more? Don't reinvent the wheel: steal from the thunderbird-stdlib project (doc here). Functions for dealing with messages (delete, archive, change tags, etc.) are included. MailUtils.js.
  • Haven't found what you need? Read the Thunderbird how-tos; they contain many recipes for things extensions want to do.
  • Still stuck? Ask in a community communication channel on the right.
  • Feeling really brave? Read the source using a fancy interface; you can often find tests that demonstrate what you're trying to achieve.

The Gloda database

Thunderbird has a subsystem called Gloda. Gloda stands for « Global Database », and creates Thunderbird-wide relations between objects. Gloda provides concepts such as Conversations, Messages, Identities, Contacts. All these concepts are related : a Conversation contains Messages which are linked to Identities (from field, to field) which are themselves part of a Contact: indeed, a contact has multiple identities.

Typical use cases for Gloda: find all messages whose subject matches [search term], find all messages from [person], find all messages in the same thread as [a given message], find all messages involving [person], etc. etc.

Gloda is extremely powerful and is used heavily by add-ons such as Thunderbird Conversations. Learn more about Gloda:

  • an overview of Gloda
  • how to create your first message query and read the gloda examples
  • Gloda internals: Gloda debugging, Gloda indexing

More Thunderbird-specific links

Some links may be out of date, but they still provide valuable information on the codebase.

  • Developer reference docs:
    • STEEL library (obsolete as of Thunderbird 52, use https://github.com/protz/thunderbird-stdlib)
  • Useful newsgroup discussions (anything that's very old should be regarded suspiciously, because there has been significant API rewrite over the past years making most techniques considerably easier)
  • Thunderbird API docs (mostly a collection of out-of-date pages, relevance is rather dubious)
  • Thunderbird developer release notes - changes in the recent Thunderbird updates affecting add-on developers. Thunderbird 5 for developers has important information on MsgHdrToMimeMessage which is a central piece of code.
